I studied Music with Applied Physics at the University of Surrey and graduated B.Mus (Hons) Tonmeister in 1981. Prior to this at, age 16 to 18, I had achieved Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Grade VIII (final) in piano and cello, also achieving Associate of Trinity College of Music London (ATCL) in piano performance, and the position of Principal Cello of the Cleveland Youth Orchestra.
After graduation I worked as a sound engineer with the Royal Opera House and was Principal Sound Engineer on tours to the USA (including the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion), Greece (Odeon of Herod Atticus), Korea (Sejong Center) and Japan (Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Osaka and Yokohama. Wanting to spend more time on music I took the position of Lecturer in Sound Engineering at City of Westminster College in London. Simultaneously I started writing for magazines including Studio Sound, Sound on Sound, Audio Media, Recording Engineer & Producer, and many more. Also at the same time, I started composing and recording for the Chappell and Carlin production music libraries (now both part of Universal Music). I now run my own production music library, DMPML Music, with a stable of more than fifty composers from around the world.
At City of Westminster College, I created the syllabus for the City & Guilds of London Institute 1820 Sound Engineering qualification, Parts 1, 2 and 3. I wrote the majority of City of Westminster College's BTEC/EdExcel Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma in Music Technology. I recently wrote the modules for the same college's Foundation Degree in Music Technology, validated by the University of Westminster, and spent two years as Manager of the course. I recently sat on the course validation panel for the B.Sc qualification in Music Technology and Production for the Limerick Institute of Technology in the Republic of Ireland.
By the way, I have written books on sound engineering and on broadcast film and video technology for Focal Press (now part of Elsevier) and PC Publishing. You might also want to search Sound on Sound for many of my 300 plus articles on Music Production and Sound Engineering.
I also publish Record-Producer.com, a news and feature website on all aspects of Music Production and Sound Engineering.
